Honomanu Bay actually means “bay of birds” and the name refers to all the colorful tropical birds that lived in the area of the bay at one time.  Although the valley was filled with birds, today the bay is home to a different animal.  Seventeen species of shark make their home in Hawaii’s waters, and Honomanu Bay houses most of them.  For this reason, the bay is never used for swimming, but there are some adventurous local surfers who will occassionally jump in to catch a wave.
