Black sand is formed by eroding lava rock, but red sand is formed by iron particles rusting right before our eyes.  If you would like to see some red sand for yourself, check out the red sand beach at the end of Uakea Road in Hana.  The trail head is located across a field at the end of the road, and the beach is a five minute, treacherous hike down the trail.  Kaihalulu Red Sand beach is not only difficult to get to, it’s clothing optional – so consider yourself warned!  If you do make it down to the water, be sure to bring your camera.  You will want plenty of pictures of this unforgettable sight.
