With the help of the key crop of pineapple the community of Haiku really hit its stride in the early 20th century.  In 1904, the first local cannery was built, and people came from all over the Pacific Rim to work in and manage the pineapple fields around Haiku.  The pineapple fields still stand, and Haiku is as diverse today as it ever was.
