Honomanu Valley and Honomanu Bay make up a beautiful spot along the Road to Hana.  The word honomanu means “of the birds”, as in “valley of the birds”.  Before Hawaii’s bird population was decimated by disease brought in by Western settlers, this valley was full of birds that the native Hawaiians plucked for their vibrant red and gold feathers.  The birds were then released to grow more colorful plumage, and the gathered feathers were used to make headdresses for local chiefs and kings.
