First brought to Maui by early Chinese laborers, today bamboo grows abundantly all over the island. The best place to experience bamboo on the Road to Hana is the Pipiwai Trail. Considered one of the best hikes on Maui, the Pipiwai Trail is located just above Oheo Gulch. Definitely start the hike prepared – its a four mile round trip that reaches a 650 foot elevation. Allow yourself two hours or even longer, depending on the pace you want to set and maintain. When you reach the bamboo forest, take a breath and enjoy the unfamiliar sight of bamboo stalks spreading out as far as the eye can see. Now, get ready for an even more awe-inspiring view. The bamboo forest on the Pipiwai Trail ends at 400 foot Waimoku Falls, a once- in-a-lifetime sight. Hana Picnic has directions.
