First brought to Maui by early Chinese laborers, today bamboo grows abundantly all over the island. The Hana Highway is a great place to spot this exotic plant. The experience of walking through a bamboo forest is otherworldly, an opportunity not to be missed.
The best place to experience bamboo on the Road to Hana is the Pipiwai Trail. Considered one of the best hikes on Maui, the Pipiwai Trail is located just above Oheo Gulch. Definitely start the hike prepared – its a four mile round trip that reaches a 650 foot elevation. Allow yourself two hours or even longer, depending on the pace you want to set and maintain. When you reach the bamboo forest, take a breath and enjoy the unfamiliar sight of bamboo stalks spreading out as far as the eye can see. Now, get ready for an even more awe-inspiring view. The bamboo forest on the Pipiwai Trail ends at 400 foot Waimoku Falls, a once- in-a-lifetime sight. This is one hike where you definitely don’t want to forget your camera.
