This sign outside the caves tells their story.

Did you know the word Waianapanapa means “glistening waters”?  It’s true, and the caves – located just past mile marker 32 on the Road to Hana – are named for a macabre Hawaiian legend about the murder of a princess at the hands of a king she was trying to escape.  Every year at spring, millions of shrimp appear, causing the waters to turn red – just they did when the princess died.  This is a great stop to make on the Road to Hana.  Aside from the caves, it also boasts a blowhole and a black sand beach.
